Services
North Yorkshire Sash Windows is a small family business, which began life as a husband and wife team.
Living in a Victorian terraced house, we appreciate the importance of maintaining and retaining the period features in your home - yet the need for them to be practical and live up to modern standards and expectations.
We buy all out timber from local merchants, use local joinery companies when installing new windows, and wherever possible ensure that our timber supplies come from an approves FSC sustainable source.
The earliest example of a sash window can be traced back to the 1690s when they were used at Hampton Court Palace.
Wooden windows, all be it double glazed, are now being fitted in to modern developments to add charm and character to new-build houses.
Security plays an important part when choosing what to do with your windows.
It is a common misconception that plastic windows are safer than their wooden alternatives, when in actual fact UPVc windows can be distorted with a standard blow torch and some early models can be physically prised from their frames.
Many sash windows have layer upon layer of thick gloss paint covering them and ensuring that they cannot be opened.
Carefully remove the top and bottom sash, so that the exact condition of the windows can be ascertained.
Any areas of rotten wood will be chiselled away, replaced and the join both sealed and weatherproofed.
Before being replaced, the windows will be rebalanced to ensure that the correct sash weights are fitted and run smoothly within the box.
The final stage is to fit any new catches and other window furniture that has been requested.
On the day (or days) that we work on your windows our craftsman will arrive at your home first thing in the morning, at a pre arranged time.
We begin by covering the room in dust sheets to ensure that your home is protected and remains clean during the work.
Our craftsman will thoroughly vacuum the area before leaving each night, and ensure that your home is left clean, tidy and clutter free.
All rubbish will be removed from your home.
Before leaving, our craftsman will discuss the work with you and demonstrate how your windows work as well as any additional catches and locks.
As well as being an important historical feature of any house, wooden windows are incredibly environmentally friendly - especially as we aim to source all of our timber from sustainable sources.
UPVc windows are chlorine based, a chemical proven to be toxic to the environment and key to the spread of dioxins around our planet.
Dioxins are released during their manufacture, and again when they are disposed of; and either incinerated or placed in a landfill site.
Their disposal is inevitable, as UPVc has a life span of around 20 to 30 years before it starts to yellow and eventually degrade.
