For many years a single pane of glass would suffice to protect you from the elements outside.
Now, you will find it difficult to find a single pane window.
Replacing the single pane was of course double glazing and even triple glazing.
Double glazed windows are two panes of glass which are kept inside an airtight frame.
This helps to guard you against the weather and it can also help to stop heat from escaping.
The problem that it brings is with the seals - these can break down over time and eventually will need replacing.
If you have misty windows this normally means that you will need double glazing repair and that the seals in between the glass have failed.
The way windows work is that years ago windows would be single pane.
This does provide some protection from the elements but of course they are not as strong and they will not keep your house as warm either.
So, the invention of triple glazing and double glazing came into effect.
As the name suggests, double glazing is actually two panes of glass that are separated by seals to make sure that they are airtight.

If you have foggy or misty windows you will be happy to know that this can be repaired.
In fact, window seal failure is a very common fault and the seals do not last forever.
The problem is caused by the seals that hold the double glazing steady and airtight deteriorating over time.
Eventually, every single double pane window will fail.
You will find that wood framed windows tend to last little bit longer with proper maintenance and will last 20-25 years.
Traditional aluminium framed windows lost around 15 years.
The main cause of failure with your windows is the weather.
Sunshine is a huge factor on this and you will normally find that if the windows are south and west facing they will fail first.
This is because when the sunshine is beaming down on the window it will heated up significantly.
